Cannot bring up Ubuntu unity desktop from chromeOS

Hi,

I installed Ubuntu and Unity Desktop on Asus Chromebook using Crouton. The Ubuntu part seemed to work. But when I started Unity Desktop (sudo startunity). It threw errors and failed to start. However, a week ago, I installed the same Ubuntu and Unity Desktop on a different Chromebook (Acer) and it worked fine. I wonder how someone help me to find out what the problem is. I would very appreciate your help. I have the log message attached below the dash line.

Thanks,

Acyk

It's not recognizing the display. Do yo have an external monitor attached?

sgosnell, thanks for the suggestion. I might have external disk drive attached to the USB port. Let me rerun startunity with nothing attached to the USB. Thanks again.

Sgosnell, I re-ran "sudo startunity" with pretty much the same problem. There was no device connecting to the USB port. There was no external monitor connecting to the chromebook. Here are the steps that created the ubuntu unity desktop:

- download crouton from link on the webpage https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton
- copy crouton to /sur/local/bin and set the chmod bits.
- bash> sudo sh /usr/local/bin/crouton -t extension,keyboard,audio,unity
- bash> sudo startunity

and the error log is below the dash line. Would you please look at the error again and let me know of any suggestion to try. I would very appreciate your help.

Best regards,

Andrew

I haven't used crouton in several years, so I'm pretty far behind the power curve on it. Have you read and followed the instructions from here? This is the only up-to-date and official source of crouton and its documentation. Using any other site will likely not work. Google changes ChromeOS so frequently that it's difficult to keep up, and most other sites are out of date.

I checked the unity desktop again. I was able to log in. But it was not showing the left tool bar as I expected. Do you know how to fix the tool bar problem. Let me also check out the instructions that you posted. Thank you very much on the suggestions.

I have never used Unity, and do not ever plan to. Sorry, but I can't help with that.
