Question

I have just connected my Linux - Red Hat box to my workgroup, all is fine except when I print over my network. I have tried hooking up my printer (HP DeskJet 895 Cxi) to my Linux box using Samba & the control panel. When I try to install the on my '98 PC across my network it asks me for drivers I don’t have and are not on my HP CD. If I do it vice versa, install it on my '98 PC and use the linux control panel to configure it using SMB. I get no prints at all.
I can print locally from both computers.

Any help greatly appreciated

1. Connect the printer to the linux box.
2. Download the printer drivers from www.hp.com
3. Configure the printer in 98 to point ot the print queue on the linux box

Can it be the other way around?

Is this the only way? How about the other way
around:
connect the network printer to the windows
machine, and have the Linux machine print
thru the windows printer server...
I don't see any reason why the above shouldn't work.
However, I don't know exact how to
make the above happen. Any ideas?

I guess it would be possible the other way around but consider the main strength of linux is the fact that it acts as a server very well.

Windows (every version including XP) make crap servers so connecting a printer to the windows machine and getting it to act as a server when you have a better server there already, well your situation make require that and I pity you.

If you were going to do that you would have to install the samba client on the linux box and then 'login' to the windows box and connect your printer to that queue.

How you would do that is beyond me but there are LOTS and LOTS of sites out there that help you setup a samba server.

If you have no luck then I can e-mail you my samba config file, it has lots of documentation thoughout it. The reason why I do that, by the time I need to make a change to the file it has been so long that I have forgotton what each setting does. It's not that hard, its just a pain learning it over everytime.
