I think that your friend is wrong ...
Your problem seems to be your ides, that M.B. came with 4 IDE slot: 2 UDMA 100 (strange) and 2 UDMA 66 (normal). Just change your HD to the UDMA 66 slots.
The same trouble has Marci Sarwan (marci_sarwan@yahoo.com), she write here the last week, you should write her (she have the same M.B., the same trouble and she made it work with RH 7.0)

http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/a7vpromise.html, she told me that there are some bootdisk that will recognize the "special" IDE (for the SuSe installation), but for compatibilities issues i recomend you to change to the ide66 slot.
