Question

Hi, I have SuSE Linux 7.1 Professional. I am trying to connect to the internet via wvdial through my xircom carbus 56k modem/ 10/100 ethernet pcmcia card. I dial the access number that i have for my windows computer and everything goes ok until wvdial starts sending the pppd. Then, it disconnects.

Any help would be appreciated.

check if your pppd version is the same as mentioned in the kernel documentation which should reside in /usr/src/linux/Documentation. If it is the right version, make sure the right pcmcia kernel modules are loaded and post relevant info like ppd errors from /var/log/messages.

* When posting please provide all necessary info. It can speed up determining where (if any) errors are.
* There is no such thing as too much info. Don't automatically assume everyone has your distro, kernel, hardware, application and can grep your /proc /etc /var/log from ESP :-]

* I don't know anything about MSN tho, if it's a Windoze-only compatibel ISP connection someone else will have to answer it :-]

It will work with linux.

You need to debug it to see where the problem is. Try running pppd see if it works, etc.

Look for the ppp howto, it should help.

Since not all MSN servers are exactly alike, it may be possible you need to send it something when you dial up. I ran into that with one ISP. I just put "login" as a chat to send and it started working. If you are seeing communication than this is not the case.

You can also try connecting manually with minicom to see if you can connect, maybe you have modem problems.
