when using ftp or telnet are there encryption process so username and passwd aren't easily taken?

Telnet and FTP are both very insecure protocols. You should seriously consider switching to SSH. OpenSSH now includes sftp, which does secure ftp. For more information check out http://www.openssh.com.

clarification

I need to know if regular ftp uses encryption so to deter 'hackers' from obtaining user passwd during transmission. Also telnet.
