Hello agin. Its me. I have been trying to recompile the Kernel following the book Running Linux. The book tells me to run the make config command in the dir /etc/src/linux

I have tried to but get an error involving the make command. I looked in that directory but found only another folder called include. This leads to some more folders. Basically it just wont work. Does anyone know where to perform the commands to recompile the kernel. I am running SUSE 7.0 with the kernel at 2.2.16

I have looked at SUSE's online database, but have no luck so far.

Any help much appreciated.

Did you install the kernel source? If you did it is usually located in /usr/src/linux (which is usually a symlink to linux-version or kernel-version).

I did not install the Kernel source (I dont know if I did), all I did was install SUSE 7.0 . I know where the Kernel version is. Can I perform the recompile from there?

If you are looking for the kernel code you can get it at http://www.kernel.org. However, that won't include any additions or changes Suse might have made to the kernel. The kernel source should be on the CD you installed off of also, though I don't know how you would get to it.

Hello again, I am really stumped this time. I read the Kernel Howto and it says the same as every other manual I have read. You have to go to /usr/src/linux to recompile the Kernel. Is this right for the SUSE distribution? I am really annoyed at not being able to do it. Any Help?

What files are there located in /usr/src/linux ???
Or are there perhaps any directories like /usr/src/linux-x.xx.xx-x.x
Otherwise the kernelsource is not installed....

And you do need the kernel source to compile the kernel... ;-)

The only thing inside the /usr/src/linux file is anothe folder called /include . Then there are some some more folders with names such as /misc /net etc...

I think that /include is linked to the Linux-2.2.16 folder. Wouldn't the Suse install put the Kernel Source onto my computer? I would have thought that it did. If not where can I download it from? (In windows, modem still not working!:-))

The source code is probably in that linux-2.2.16 directory.... Try doing a make menuconfig (if in text mode) or a make xconfig (in x mode) in the linux-2.2.16 directory.

You were all right about the need for the source code to be in that folder. It wasn't , so I installed it from a cdrom which had 2.4 on it. Everything went according to plan, but for the fact that I couldn't use xconfig and I haven't figured out how to use the new kernel. I keep booting from the old kernel (2.2.16) off a floppy even though I thought I had copied the new kernel. Just help me clarify this:

To make a boot floppy you just have to copy the file /boot/vmlinuz onto a floppy?

This is what I did, and the new floppy worked but when I go and check it (uname -a) I get 2.2.16 come up.
