The homepage for xscreensaver is here: http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/ There is documentation and faqs on this site. [/B][/QUOTE]
Gnome & xscreensaver dont' really get along all that well.
The documentation on xscreensaver's website DOES actualy work, however your Gnome settings can override what you tell xscreensaver to do using xscreensaver-demo.
Rather than using xscreensaver's configuration tools, Gnome gives you it's own screensaver configuration and keeps those settings stored seperately.
When Gnome launches xscreensaver, it passes all of your Gnome configured settings to it on the commandline, overrieding anything you have set in the xscreensaver configuration.
So when you add things to xscreensaver's configuration it won't affect Gnome. I haven't figured out how to update Gnome's screensaver options, but I think if you configure Gnome to not even USE a screensaver, and then manually put xscreensaver into your startup, you can get Gnome to keep it's paws out of your xscreensaver configuration.
I have recently installed xscreensaver on Ubuntu 18.04 and some of them were greyed out, or not installed. By running the following command I was able to add extra screen savers.
Building on what loungnlizard said, many distros do not by default include all of the Xscreensaver screensavers in the default install, but the others can usually be found in the repos.
As regards lamer Xscreensaver derivatives, such Kscreenaver, Gnome-screensaver, and the like, I always remove them and replace them with the real thing. I have never encountered conflicts or lack of functionality in doing that.

As far as I have been able to determine, said lamer derivatives were not created for functionality, but merely for (pah!) branding.
