Question

I'm considering using a LINUX PC as a SLIP router. I have several remote devices that are used for data collection. The remote devices have modems attached and are accessed via a SLIP connection. The remote device answers the incomming call and prompts the user for a login and password etc.. IP assignments are static. The user does all this from a local NT platform. Once the connection is made then the NT application is launched and it downloads the collected data, etc..The NT platform can also access the devices via a LAN connection (ethernet).
I'm experiencing problems with the NT device being remotely accessed and the initiation of the SLIP connection. I need an external device to establigh the SLIP connection and route the IP traffic to the ethernet.
What I would like to do is to attach a LINUX platform to the existing LAN. The LINUX unit would dial out to the remote location, log on, and start the slip connection. Once the slip connection is established then the LINUX platform routes IP data between the ethernet and the serial port(s) as needed.
Does this sound like it's a possibility? Any suggestions on where I get more information (additional reading), etc.. would be greately appreciated. I am relatively new to LINUX.

If you can't find it here at LQ.org under the Linux Wiki or Linux Tutorial section then go for The Linux Documentation Project > http://www.tldp.org
