The system seems to start I get the proper mouse pointer and it looks nice but then I don't get any icons in the bar at the bottom and I can't see the pointer at all.
Thanks for any help.
Brian
I have Glc 2.2. I DL'd the Mandrake 8.0 install CDs and installed from there The configuration file was created automatically by the install process and I made the minor adjustment to change the mouse pointer from the big white box to a pointer. Other than that it is just like the distro install program created. Those were the two lines that worried me too. I don't think it is related to the video as I said the video appears to look fine until it finishes loading the desktop at which point if you move the mouse pointer it leaves a ghost of itself at the original place and may or may not show up at a new point on the desktop and leave another ghost of itself there.
I've reinstalled the Distro twice.
Thanks
Yeah it may have, but I dl'd the cd's as ISO files and burned them to CD, I'd be surprised if that were the problem. What would be the recommended recovery? I have DL'd the Xfee86 4.1 files but not yet installed them on this install (I tried before I reinstlled linux this last time and it didnt help). Command line mode works fine and I have internet access while in Linux, just no X. Do you think it could be a problem with the window manager? Thanks for the ideas.
If you can send me a copy of your XF86Config file I would be able to look at it for you. Have you tried using the two different versions of XF86 available during the install?

I've had the same problem with the RH Linux 7.1 Distro. and gcc 2.96-81. Something (I'm guessing QSocketNotifier) complains about a misconfiguration. Is there any fix for this problem? Also, startx outputs an error message: "hostname lookup failure" everytime I run it. I'm not sure if this problem and the other one are related. Now that I think about it, most of the error messages in the posted error log also show up in mine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
I had this same line in my start up log. I fixed it by going to the file /etc/hosts
Editing the file I put the name of my computer as an alias on the localhost.localdomain line. If you changed the name of your computer from localhost.localdomain, this may be the cause of your problem too.
