Does anybody know in which order exactly the config (startup) files are processed on a RedHat system (6.0)

You might look in /etc/inittab and choose your destiny (runlevel 3 or 5, that is X or console only)

/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit should give you a good idea of what is going on.
