Question

I have just upgraded a Red Hat 6.2 server to Red Hat 7.1
I have gotten most of the services back up and functioning correctly except SNMP. When I run /usr/sbin/snmpd the SNMP service starts. Then I get flooded with the following error

Get_local_host: 'localhost' IP address not available!
Get_local_host: 'localhost' IP address not available!
Get_local_host: 'localhost' IP address not available!
Get_local_host: 'localhost' IP address not available!
Get_local_host: 'localhost' IP address not available!
Get_local_host: 'localhost' IP address not available!

And it's all over the screen. It's very odd. The server is running BIND 9.1.2 and it's working correctly. I have no idea where to start. Can somebody point me in the right direction ? Thanks in advance for any help you may offer....

humour me...

what does nslookup localhost produce? If it returns the correct result (127.0.0.1) then its a problem with you snmpd config otherwise check your DNS! You might want to look at /etc/hosts.conf to see what order your names are being resolved. You will probably want it to look at your hosts file first, then restord to dns.

HTH

I did an nslookup localhost and it provided the following:

** server can't find localhost.: NXDOMAIN

In my /etc/host.conf I have one line

order hosts,bind

In my /etc/hosts file I have

192.168.74.53 gacorpdns01.intelispan.net gacorpdns01

What do I need to add ? and to which file ? Thanks again for the help.....

I added that to my /etc/hosts file and restarted my dns server.
I did an nslookup localhost and received the same message. What am I not doing correctly ? Is there another service I need to restart to load the /etc/hosts file ?

Sorry - I think I should have told you to try to ping local host. nslookup only queries your DNS server, it doesn't make use of the system resolver, hence doesn't look at /etc/hosts. Here's what happens on my box:

root@mnemosyne:~# nslookup localhost
Server: localhost
Address: 127.0.0.1

*** localhost can't find localhost: Non-existent host/domain
root@mnemosyne:~# ping localhost
PING localhost (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=0.2 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=0.1 ms

--- localhost ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 0.1/0.1/0.2 ms

Give the original SNMP program a go and see what happens.
