Unhappy

I need some help maintaining a relationship between /dev/sd[whatever] and the physical lun. My problem comes in because I'm using external storage, and cannot always guarantee the scan order upon boot up will be the same each time. Also I would like to be able to add/remove storage to meet my various needs. I can accomplish this, my problem is each time I do this I get a 'trickle down' effect. If I remove what was the /dev/sdd device, the /dev/sde becomes /dev/sdd. This makes it very difficult to manage mounting filesystems. Is there some functionality I'm not taking advantage of? Or will I have to talk to /proc/scsi/scsi each time to remove and add devices.
(ie: echo "scsi remove-single-device 0 0 1 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi ??

Lightbulb I've mostly figured out my question.....

Okay,

I've finally gotten the answer I need. I can mount a partition based on its uuid.

There is a utility to create new uuids, uuidgen, but how do I view the current uuid of a given partition? I've searched through docs, forums, and books. I still can't figure it out. Does anyone out there know?
