We have a redhat 6.2 dual intel processor box that has been fine for the last few weeks. Yesterday it apparently lost it's network connectivity. (We're on a token-ring network).
Doing a cat on various files in /proc/net (arp, route, etc.) showed valid information, but the commands themselves (route, arp), would take minutes to display any info. All other boxes on the network responded that the box was unreachable. Doing a '/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart' fixed things, but I'd like to know what went wrong. Nothing showed up in any logs. We're on kernel 2.2.14. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

Unfortunately without more info it is hard to tell what happened. If it happens again I would check the output of ifconfig and route and see if there is anything unusual. You may also want to install a network analyzer (something like ethereal or tcpdump).

I realize that theres really little info to go on. Hopefully it doesn't happen again, but if so I'll try tcpdump or similar, as you suggest. Thanks for the answer.

Well, i have a Token Ring too and I have a weird problem in WinNT ... I could ping the interface but from the outside i had problems at times... The machine went very slow ... no logs left ...

At last i find that the cable was loose inside the connector. That causes the adapter in and out of the ring so fast that it works half the time. RIP couldn't decide if there were a route there or not. After i fixed the cable everithing runs smooth. Maybe is something like that in your case... check the cables !

andrés.
