I need to know , if I download a zipped file , like a .tar or what ever , and extract it , where do i extract the files to , to show up in the startup listings? Like windows , when you extract or install it , to show up in the programs lisiting.... Is there any specific program to use in linux to extract it with?

If you could help , I would appreciate it very much , I
am using Mandrake 7.1

Thank you....

Firstly a file with .tar at the end means that it is a collection of files grouped together. It should have .gz at the end if it is a zipped file (or both as in .tar.gz).

To access these files you need to run the command
tar xvzf abcd.tar.gz (where abcd.tar.gz is the file)

This will then create a folder called abcd in the directory the .tar.gz was saved to. You will then probably have to read the README file in the new folder to find out how to make the program you want.

If you want a shortcut on the desktop then you need to place a shortcut in the folder /home/<yourusername>/desktop
