I have the need for a very small linux system with a very low power consumption, I have seen somewhere on the web a linux system that loaded the whole kernel from a ROM chip into RAM therefore not requireing a harddrive to run..

I need to setup a remote solar powered camera attached to a small computer and then transfer the images via a mobile phone back to my base station with out any user intervention.

If anybody has any information on such a system or indeed any good sugestions for the total solution I would be grateful.

My personal favorite when it comes to small disto's is ZipSlack, which is about 80 megs. If not having a hard drive is a requirement the following distro's claim to fit on a floppy:

http://tiny.seul.org
http://www.wu-wien.ac.at/usr/h93/h9301726/dlx.html
http://home.sol.no/~okolaas/hal91.html

These distro's are made to run out of flash rom (16-32M)

http://linux-embedded.com/
http://www.ThinLinux.org/

Of coarse the joy of Linux is that you can just download the kernel and make your own distro that exactly suits your needs.
