Hi all,

My Linux server runs smooth on a old PII 233, but i have just been given a PII 350. The problem is the PII 233 only has a heatsink on it, no fan. Does the PII 350 require a heatsink and fan or will the heatsink i have work good enough.

Thanks in advance.

Will yo' mobo take a PII-350? IIRC it requires a 100MHz FSB. (440BX at least)

You've got one of those PII-233 with the BIG heatsink that looks like a bunch of long 'fingers' sticking up off of it. I saw those a lot in the Aptivas. I would definately get a fan. If you are feeling handy - have a look at the screws holding the heatsink on the PII and see if the bolt pattern matches the PII mounts. (Sounds like a redneck garage in here all of a sudden). If you can't get a CPU fan/heatsink combo you should get a regular case fan (or two) and fab up a 'hood' that will direct the air flow onto the chip. Now you have to watch that you don't create a dead air space inside your box. You could use a fan at the back to blow in (positive pressure) and a fan at the fron to blow out (negative pressure). Your power supply is probably blowing out as well. This method gathers lots of dust on all those fingers which make up the heatsink. Now go and patch the whole thing together with some hunnert mile-an-hour tape and slap a Rusty Wallce decal on the front.

Inspect regularly!

Talking chears matey

I thought it would require a fan aswell,
the cooler masters fans only cost £5 where i am.

I was under the impression that the PII 350 was 100mhz bus.

Thanks for the quick reply

Yep the PII-350 is a 100MHz fsb, but the 233 that it's replacing is 66MHz fsb so you'll have to be sure that your mobo will support it. The PII @ 100MHz is a nice proc for servers as it's got reasonable power consumption and good speed for a server. They're a rare bird out here as everyone jumped into PIII's really quick.
