I was trying to format a floppy disk and I could just not get fdformat to work, I kept getting an error like
fd0 is busy or something. How do get fdformat to work.

Question

I try to use fdformat to wipe the floppy clean, but NOT when the floppy drive is mounted. Maybe that is your problem. Make sure that you also have a floppy in the drive (I know obvious but essential!), also, type up here what you are typing to use fdformat, and then I can compare. You also know that you need to make a filesystem on the floppy after you have formated it? Anyway, tell us what you are typing.

Re fdformat

I use,
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy/

I've tried
fdformat /dev/fd0
fdformat /mnt/floppy
fdformat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
fdformat /dev/fdH1440
fdformat fdH1440

disk is in the drive.

Tony. From what you just described, it seems that you're getting the busy error message because the drive is busy. You indicated that you first mounted the floppy.

Keep in mind that in formating a device, you're removing all data from it. So you'll actually put a disk that you don't have data you intend to keep or with no data in your floppy drive.

If you have mounted the floppy, use the, umount /mnt/floppy command to undo what you just did. Then try fdformat /dev/fd0h1440. After that you will then make your desired filesystem on the floppy.

You can put dos on the floppy by running mkdosfs /dev/fd0h1440.
