Thumbs down

Hello.

I have a problem that I hope somebody can help me with. A few days ago, I installed Mandrake Linux 7.2. After installation (which had no problems), I attempted to log in as root. The computer froze up. The hard drive wasn't spinning, and the activity light wasn't blinking. I restarted and logged in my normal user account. No problem. But I wasn't satisfied, so I reinstalled Linux, hoping the freezing thing would go away. It did. But all is not well.....

Yesterday, I logged in as root. I had the GNOME terminal running, when I stepped away from my computer for about 40 minutes. I came back, and the screen was black. I moved the mouse, and the screen came back. At the bottom of the terminal, there was some error messages, but I didn't pay much attention to them, as I didn't think that there was much of a problem. I closed the terminal, and double clicked on my home directory shortcut icon on the GNOME desktop. An error message popped saying something like "unable to open directory" or something like that. "Oh crap" I thought. I logged off, and the computer froze. I shut it off, then on again, and tried to log in as root. The computer froze again, just like it did when I first installed it. I can still log in as my normal user account as well as use the SU command to go in as root, but I can't get in as root right at startup.

Can anybody tell me how to fix this problem? I know I can just reinstall, but that isn't quite the solution I am looking for (especially once I start putting files on the machine)!

Thank you.
