Currently, I am connecting at 28800, but I have a Actiontec 56K with Call Waiting. I am one of the unfortuate Northpoint victims. Is there someway of connecting at a higher rate of speed? I have an Earthlink account, but maybe there is something wrong in the way I am sending and recieving packs? Help

the slow speed might kust be due to traffic but it may be due to other things such as the speed at which the serial port is running (although the default is usually fine).

first if you;re using something like kppp then change the speed of the modem from 112500 (if you had it that high) back down to 57600. for some reason that speeds things up a wee bit.

then the more important part. you need to alter the size of the packets that are sent and recieved over you connection.

su to root and type in the password. then go to /etc/ppp/ and look for a file there called 'options' and enter after crtstcs (which should also be in there):
mtu 576
mru 512

this should help speed things up a bit.

email if any of this is unclear (which it may be)

Alex
