Does any one know if there is any problems with Mandrake 7.2 with Sound Blaster 16 Cards, i can't get the sound to work (xmms, cdplayer),i have tried to change the settings but it wont let me (with root of course).
I also have this sound card.
sndconfig does not find it (in mandrake 7.2).
But it will let you configure it manually.
this gives most things sound but i have yet
to get the aRts server to work with it.
I also do not get cd to play.
I've had the same problem with mandrake 7.1
First, you need to determine your hardware settings. If you have windows, boot into it, and find the IRQ, DMA (both low and high), and hex memory address settings for that sound card. Wirte these down on a peice of paper, you'll need them later.
Now boot back to linux and run sndconfig
choose SoundBlaster 16, and manually set these settings (as you have retrieved them from windows). You may need to re-login to X or Gnome, but then your sound card will work. Also, to set up linux to play Mp3s, you need to mess with mime types and applications.
good luck
:-)
