im not very good with graphics when it comes to programming. can anyone suggest a good format to use (i've used gifs) or tips for me.

i would really appreciate if someone coulde explain how to display graphics on different "layers" of the screen!!!

im making an rpg and ive decided to try using a lot of graphics.

that would be tremendously helpful

You may want to check this site out: http://www.libsdl.org it is a good multimedia API (and multi-platform). Loki games actually uses it to port Win32 games to Linux and many others have created their own programs (including games) using it.
